A typical BBL HEROicTM treatment involves:
- Your skin will be cleansed to remove make-up, dirt and oils. Depending on the type of treatment, a topical numbing cream may be applied for comfort. If treating acne and redness, as much as possible, the doctor will try to avoid numbing cream as it causes the target area to become paler thereby decreasing the efficacy of the light treatment.
- Protective eyewear will be provided to shield your eyes from the intense light.
- The BBL treatment settings are customized based on your skin type and skin issues.
- A handheld device is gently applied to your skin, emitting short bursts of broad-spectrum light.
- A typical session lasts about 15-30min, depending on the size of the treatment area.
- You may feel warmth, mild discomfort like a rubber-band snapping on your skin. This is usually well-tolerated.
Immediately after treatment:
- Your skin may feel warm and appear slightly red and/or swollen, similar to a mild sunburn.
- Sunscreen will be applied to protect the treated area.
- The redness usually lasts less than a day and patients are able to apply make-up the next day.
Days 1–7:
- Redness and warmth usually subside within 1–12 hours and patients can start applying make-up.
- Swelling may persist for a few days, especially around the eyes
- Skin may feel sensitive or tender
- Pigmented areas usually darken, peaking around 4–5 days post-treatment before lightening and/or you’ll see fine scabs peeling off as skin heals.
Weeks 2–4:
- Continued improvement in skin tone and texture
- Pigmentation and dark spots should fade
Long-term results:
- Visible improvement typically visible 1–2 months after treatment
Most patients can return to normal activities immediately, but it's recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and excessive sweating for 48 hours post-treatment. Sun protection is crucial during recovery to prevent complications and achieve intended results.
Possible complications:
- PIH (Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation): Darkening of the skin following a period of inflammation. Usually results from prolonged inflammation or irritation to skin. This inflammation triggers melanocytes (“pigment cells”) to produce excessive melanin which darkens the affected area. This is more common in dark-skinned individuals. It is usually temporary and can improve with topicals/creams after 6–12 months.
- Bruising in areas rich in blood vessels – unusual
- Rare instances of blistering or scarring
- Keep the treated area clean
- Follow post-treatment care instructions.
- Stay hydrated and use moisturizers
- Avoid direct sun exposure and ensure sun protection (high SPF sun-screen and wear a hat/visor/cap)
